maybe where you live. but that's just not the case here. most cops are just hard working people who want to go home to their families every night, just like you. and it may seem like most cops are power hungry brutes, but you only see the cases of wrong doing in the news. how many times do you get to hear or read about the cop who found a child who'd been lost for days and brought her home? or the cop who saved a life b/c he was the first to respond and administer cpr? or the cop who kept a family out of danger b/c he happened by their house just as someone druggie was about to break in? well........ how come these stories don't make it to the news? because the world would rather continue to believe that all cops are bad.

actually, i don't know all of them. ron works in the city, it has 1500 officers. even in our little town with only 5 cops, i don't know them or what their personalities are like

You are no more right to generalize than I am, M. The reason these stories arent in the headlines? Because they RARELY happen.

Unfortunately Merideth, the general consensus here is that most people agree that alot of Police officers are assholes. The only person disagreeing strongly with this statement is yourself, and I understand that. However the only reason you are disagreeing with it is because your husband is one.
I would stick up for my spouse no matter what they did, or what their job was, so I respect you for that. Nobody is saying that your husband is an asshole, I am sure that there are plenty of Cops out there who are honest, fair, and protect us the way they should. However there are a large number of them who are assholes and who abuse their power, in fact I am in no doubt that many of them joined the police force for this very reason.

You said that people have this distorted view of cops because they only see the corruption on the news, not the Police "saving the day".
My views on them come soley from my personal experiences of them........ and to say that I only have this view because I have no regard for the law is ridiculous........ if I have broken the law and get caught then I respect that............ it has been my dealings with them when I have commited no crime whatsoever that has tarnished my view of them.
Perhaps the very reason you have such a view of them is because you are married to one............ I seriously doubt you would ever have a problem with any of them since your husband is one.

I respect your loyalty to your spouse, but to tell us that the sun shines out of the Police Force's ass is ridiculous, I make my judgements based on my own experiences, and you cannot, no matter how hard you try change these thoughts, as they are based on reality, not what I hear on the news.......... I have had a number of "nasty" experiences with the "law", and to tell me that my view is biased is a joke. I do not have a distorted view, I think that you do.

Nobody is attacking your husband, I am sure that he is a wonderful person.......... however your views on the Police force hold no substance whatsoever.
We all agree that not 100% of the force are assholes, but at the same time, nobody is a perfect example of humanity, nobody is a real hero.......... and just putting on a uniform does not make you one.
Quite the opposite, human nature dictates that once a person feels they have power over others, they will abuse the power they have been given.
