note: this isn't suppose to be a game. I'm just curious to see what everyone thinks of when I say Oriental.

well, I always used Asian and Oriental interchangeably until a coworker Ms. Tsang set me straight about using Oriental to describe people. Apparently it borders on the "N" word, so now I never use it. Glad she told me, I had no idea it had a bad connotation. White Oriental Gentleman? If I offended anyone by calling them Oriental It was entirely "Occidental" on my part. So Solly! ;(

-o- IIIIyahhhh!

Oriental Massage? Swedish Massage? hmmm.

really? Oriental is just as bad as the "n" word? I personally have never had a problem with it. The only words that offend me is if someone calls me a chink.

I typically think when I hear Oriental I think of China. Since China was like the place that started it all. lol

CinnamonGirl, yeah kinda. I'm just wondering how people think. I may ask you why you selected that. Do you own lots of sony products? Do you like Oriental rugs?

here I found a website that mentions this

<a href='https://mit.imoat.net/handbook/racist.htm' target='_blank'>https://mit.imoat.net/handbook/racist.htm</a>
The preference is for Asian or Asian American rather than Oriental. Again, specific groups may prefer labels based on country of origin (Japanese American, Korean).
and
By the way, does the rest of the world still use the term "oriental" to refer to East Asians? In the US, it's politically incorrect to call someone "oriental." I remember my 6th grade teacher corrected me when I innocently described a girl as Oriental. She said, "The proper term is 'Asian' -- 'Oriental' is only used to describe rugs and furniture." The state of Washington even passed a bill outlawing the use of the word when referring to people

I live on the Pacific Rim, as it's called, and have to be aware of these sensibilities. Either that or get killed. Ha ha. Actually I try to avoid racial terms altogether, but it can be sort of funny. Like when the cop asks if the perp was black, you must say I don't know. I never notice these things."

one more: A poll on the very topic at another forum:

*shrugs*

I personally don't have a problem with that. Probably because the word Oriental orginated from China. lol.

I guess it's a bad word to use for that reason. Because it's politically incorrect. *shrugs*.

You sure may ask me G.O.D.

At one time, I used to deal in antiques....sold a good amount of Oriental rugs...which of course, some may know, are not all Oriental.

"Oriental rug" is more of a general term that most people use and it is more of a style of rug than where it was actually made. :D
